QuiltCon is coming back to Austin in February 2020 and the Austin Modern Quilt Guild is helping out by staffing an info table to orient folks to our fine town.
Because Austin is home to the world’s largest urban bat colony, we’ll be wearing bat ears and the fantastic new AMQG Batty shirts.
I made 18 sets of bat ears, but if you want to make your own (for QuiltCon or any other event), here’s the tutorial:
Felt, in 2 colors (I found that it’s easier to use stiffened felt for at least one of the colors)
Hot glue
Headband
Cut two ears
Cut two outer and two inner ears from different colors of felt. Trace both sides of the template to get mirror images of each shape (a right ear and a left ear).
Glue inner ear to outer ear
Use hot glue to adhere the inner ear shape to the outer ears.
Pinch & glue a fold in the ears
Use a drop of hot glue to crease the middle of the ear together.
Clamp the ears with binder clips
Use small binder clips to clamp the ears together as the hot glue dries.
Glue ears to headband
Using the tabs from the template, hot glue the ears to a headband.
Wear your bat ears!
Wear your bat ears proudly to help you echolocate your nearby friends and next meal.
